Men’s Soccer: Terriers get first Patriot League win against Bucknell

Boston University Men’s Soccer (3-3-6, 1-1-3 PL) defeated Bucknell (2-10-0, 1-4 PL) 2-0 on Saturday at Nickerson Field, gaining their first conference win of the season.
The Terriers started the first half with high intensity and they controlled the rhythm of the game. High pressure from the Terriers caused the Bison to lose balls in their half, which led to some clear chances on goal.
One of the clearest chances came in the 17th minute from BU sophomore Brian Hernandez, who struck the ball from outside the box and forced goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth to make a tough save.
“We wanted to come out and have a good start, and I think we did,” BU Head Coach Kevin Nylen said.
The first goal came at the 19th minute mark after a beautiful play from senior Colin Innes. After a skillful roulette by Innes, he played a one-two with Quinn Matulis in a crowded left corner of the box. The midfielder then struck the ball into the top corner of the goal.
“[Innes] has been steady and consistent this entire season,” Nylen said. “He had a great goal, and I am sure he can keep improving.”
BU’s second goal in the 22nd minute came from a corner. Senior Griffin Roach headed the ball into the back of the net from a Matulis set piece. The goal marked Matulis’ second assist of the game and Roach’s first tally as a Terrier.
The 2-0 scoreline was the biggest lead the Terriers have held all season.
In the second half, intensity levels came down from the Terrier side. The game slowed and there were not many chances for either side.
“It was good to come out with two first half goals,” Nylen said. “After that it was not as important to go search for the third as of keeping the 2-0 lead.”
The Terriers will next take on Loyola Maryland in Baltimore Saturday at 1 p.m.
