Field Hockey: Terriers best Saint Louis to close Iowa road trip

By Gracie Davenport

The Boston University field hockey team closed out its two-game Iowa road trip with a 2-1 victory over Saint Louis University yesterday afternoon. These teams have not met since 2003 and hashed it out in a neutral setting, facing each other at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa.

With this loss, the Saint Louis Billikens now sport a 0-3 record as they continue to look for their first win of the season. Saint Louis has struggled from the beginning, and BU capitalized on this throughout Saturday’s matchup.

Regardless of the close score, BU topped SLU in all offensive aspects: shots 19-3, shots on goal 11-3 and corners 7-4. In the first quarter alone, Boston picked up six corner attempts. After two unsuccessful attempts, junior forward Tess Csejka converted on the third to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. Csejka now leads the Terriers in goals with three goals in four games..

Unphased, the Billikens quickly answered with a goal a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. SLU’s Olivia French dribbled the ball into the back of the cage.

Over the next 43 minutes of gameplay, the score would remain tied. BU’s goaltender tandem of senior Caroline Kelly and junior Kate Thomason denied all four Saint Louis penalty corners.

The Terriers may have found life in the third, outshooting the Billikens 5-0, but ultimately could not find the back of the cage. Carrying over this energy into the final frame, senior midfielder Mikayla Crowley finally broke the tie 1:39 into the fourth. The game-winner marked Crowley’s second goal of the season.

BU improves its overall record to 2-2 and will face UMass Lowell this Friday in Lowell, Mass. at 6 p.m.
