Women’s Lacrosse: Terriers’ early-season woes continue against Colgate
By Joe Eachus
The Boston University women’s lacrosse team’s early-season skid continued Saturday afternoon with a 13-7 loss to Colgate.
With the loss, which put the team at 0-8 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, the Terriers are off to their worst start in program history.
Scoring struggles were once again a theme of the matchup against the Raiders (2-7, 1-0 PL), as BU struggled to get much going on the offensive end.
Freshman attack Matty Spaeth was one of the lone bright spots for BU, notching yet another hat trick. Sophomore midfielder Kendall Sims scored twice, and sophomore defense Ellen Monahan managed her first collegiate goal while spending time at attack late in the game.
Colgate’s sophomore attack Catie Lang had a scoring outburst of four goals and six points, with two other Raiders scoring hat tricks as well.
Spaeth got things started with her 13th goal of the season, and while Colgate evened things up, Spaeth scored again to regain the lead for the Terriers four minutes into the contest. It would be their last lead of the game.
Colgate then erupted for five straight goals to round out the first, and though junior attack/midfield Jen Barry would score at the end of the frame to narrow the lead to just three, it would not be enough.
The second was incredibly low-scoring for most of the time, as Spaeth completed her hat trick for the lone Terrier goal of the frame.
The Raiders were held scoreless until 1:26 left on the clock, and a buzzer-beater goal by junior attack Lauren Marandett sent Colgate to the locker rooms with a comfortable lead.
BU would be held scoreless in the third, as the Raiders extended their lead to six on two more goals.
Into the fourth, the Terriers threatened to regain momentum following a 3-1 run capped off by Monahan’s first collegiate goal, bringing the lead down to four with five minutes to play. Colgate then shut the door with two goals in the final 1:30 to end all Terrier hopes of coming back for their first win of the season.
BU will next take a trip down to Baltimore to take on No. 7 Loyola Maryland, with opening draw scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
