Women’s Basketball: Second-quarter run propels BU to 59-45 win versus Colgate
By Hannah Yoshinaga
Boston University women’s basketball took advantage of a major second-quarter run to handily defeat Colgate 59-45 on the road Saturday.
The Terriers (12-8, 8-1 PL) maintained their lead atop the Patriot League standings with the win, while the Raiders’ (3-18, 1-9 PL) second-consecutive loss keeps them in last place.
Sophomore center Caitlin Weimar set a new BU career-high with 17 points. Weimar also added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the conference season.
Junior guard Sydney Johnson contributed 16 points and led with six rebounds. Off the bench, junior guard Maggie Pina posted 11 points of her own after going 4-for-6 from the field, including three made baskets from beyond the arc.
BU got off to a modest start in the first quarter. Johnson made back-to-back buckets to give the Terriers a 5-0 lead, but Colgate quickly made up the deficit. The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the period, which ended 15-14 in BU’s favor.
The Terriers quickly jumped out to a lead in the second, led by Johnson, Pina and Weimar. BU extended its lead to double-digits midway through the period, outscoring the Raiders 19-6 during the quarter.
While Colgate’s shooters were able to keep pace with the Terriers during the third, BU still recorded its largest advantage of the game, 17 points, late in the period.
It was much of the same to begin the fourth, with a three-pointer by Colgate’s Alexa Brodie even cutting the Raiders’ deficit to single-digits. However, a scoreless streak nearly four minutes long at the end of the quarter allowed BU to wrap up the win.
Brodie finished the game as Colgate’s leading scorer with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting, in addition to three assists, three steals and two rebounds.
The Terriers have now won four straight contests against the Raiders, dating back to Feb. 12, 2020.
They’ll face a test in their next game, a road matchup against fourth-place Bucknell. The Bison’s roster features Taylor O’Brien, whose 16.8 PPG ranks second in the conference, and Cecelia Collins, a four-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week selection.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
