Women’s Hockey: Schroeder named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week

WAKEFIELD – Boston University junior netminder Corinne Schroeder was named Defensive Player of the Week for Hockey East as the league announced its weekly awards on Monday. Schroeder is coming off a weekend that saw her earn both wins in then-No. 9 BU’s sweep of then-No. 8 Boston College; BU leapfrogged BC in the USCHO’s latest poll after the sweep, now ranking eighth and ninth, respectively..

In Friday’s 6-0 route of the Eagles, Schroeder stopped all 21 shots she faced en route to her second shutout of the season and the fifth of her career. The Elm Creek, Manitoba, native was strong once again for BU on Saturday, stopping 25 of the 26 shots she faced in the team’s 2-1 win and limiting a BC team that scores over three goals per game to just one in two games.

“[Schroeder] is unreal,” redshirt senior captain Sammy Davis said after Saturday’s victory. “She’s had a great season and she’s a huge part of our team. She really helps us when we need her.”

During Saturday’s win, Schroeder’s shutout streak was snapped with Kelly Browne’s power play tally for the Eagles, which marked the first goal the BU goaltender had allowed in 172:22 of game action. Schroeder is also yet to allow an even-strength goal in her last 179:54 of action.

“Schroeder’s been amazing, and she’s always been amazing,” said sophomore forward Mackenna Parker following Friday’s blowout. “She’s always making huge saves that make or break a game.”

On the season, Schroeder holds a 9-3-1 record to go along with a .949 save percentage, which is the third-best mark in the entire nation, and a 1.39 goals-against average, fifth in Division I.

“Corinne was an all-star in the league last season, and has come out and played even better than last year,” head coach Brian Durocher said on Saturday afternoon. “She’s super consistent. It’s great that you continue to see her grow and develop as a goaltender.”

The Terriers are set to embark on the holiday break following exams, and will return to action next month as they’ll welcome in the University of Maine Black Bears for a two-game set at Walter Brown Arena, beginning on Jan. 4.
