Men’s Hockey: Terriers trip to NYC turns sour after Red Hot Hockey loss to No. 2 Cornell

NEW YORK CITY– In one of the most exciting college hockey matchups of the year, the Boston University Terriers (4-6-5, 3-3-4 HEA) took a tough 2-0 loss to the No. 2 Cornell Big Red (9-0, 6-0 ECAC) at Madison Square Garden in New York City

The game got off to a slow start with neither team able to put one in the net through the first period. Despite three total power plays in the period, one for Cornell and two for BU, Sam Tucker and Matthew Galajda survived their first big defensive tests of the game.

When the second period began, the game saw no goals for the first seven minutes; but in the eighth minute, that quickly changed. Within 30 seconds, the Big Red got two shots past Tucker, who otherwise collected 24 saves in a solid effort for BU, to take the 2-0 lead that would last for the rest of the game.

Sophomore Michael Regush got the first goal for Cornell, his fifth goal and seventh point of the season, while junior Brendan Locke added on the second, his fourth goal and tenth total point, just twenty seconds later. On top of that, the Big Red’s junior goaltender Galajda logged 28 saves in his first shutout effort of the season.

Despite the six total power plays, both goals were scored in a 5-on-5 setting. Even though they did not score, the Terriers were able to hold the Big Red to a season-low-tying two goals and staved off Cornell’s offense for all but one minute of the game

The Big Red are off until Friday, December 6th when they head to Harvard to face the Crimson, while Terriers will look to rebound as they had back to Agganis Arena to face the Crimson Tomorrow.
