Women’s Hockey: Terriers look to build momentum in visit to Maine

By: Patrick Donnelly

Head coach Brian Durocher and the Boston University Terriers (2-1-1, 1-1-1 WHEA) will head to Orono, Maine, to take on the University of Maine Black Bears (2-2-1, 0-1-0 WHEA) in a Sunday matinee as they look to come away with an undefeated road trip.

Coming off a hard-fought 1-0 win over UConn on Friday evening, which was the Terriers’ first in-conference win of the season, BU is looking to snag another huge Hockey East win.

“It’s real important to get points in the league,” Durocher said heading into the weekend. “Maine has got some real talented players that we have to keep an eye on–Teresa Vanišová is certainly one of the more talented players in the league.”

While goaltending has been strong for the Terriers, as expected, goals have come at a premium for the team so far as the Terriers have failed to score more than two goals in any of their four contests so far this season. The absence of the team’s top center, junior Jesse Compher, who is not expected to return this afternoon, certainly does not help things along.

“We haven’t scored that well so far,” Durocher continued. “There’s enough people that have the ability [to score goals], and maybe it’s just a matter of people getting comfortable, relaxed and confident. Maybe if a couple pucks jump in the net that’ll start to happen more.”

Junior netminder Corinne Schroeder earned the 38-save shutout versus UConn on Friday, so there is a high possibility she gets the call again versus Maine. However, Durocher did not let on if he was leaning towards Schroeder or sophomore Kate Stuart.

Senior defender Abby Cook has points in consecutive games as she scored in the team’s 4-2 loss to New Hampshire last weekend and assisted on Deziray De Sousa’s game-winner on Friday, her second-straight game-winning assist.

The Black Bears are seeking their first win in Hockey East this season as head coach Richard Reichenbach’s group is coming off a 6-1 loss at the hands of third-ranked Northeastern on Friday. The action is set to kick off at 2:00 pm this afternoon at Harold Alfond Arena.
