Women’s Hockey: Schroeder’s 38 saves lead Terriers to 1-0 shutout over UCONN

STORRS – The Boston University Terriers (2-1-1, 1-1-1 WHEA) took down the University of Connecticut Huskies (3-2-0, 1-2-0 WHEA) by a final score of 1-0 on Friday evening, delivering the perfect birthday present for head coach Brian Durocher.

“It was a very even game for the most part,” Durocher said after the contest.

Junior goaltender Corinne Schroeder was a star in net for the Terriers as she stopped all 38 shots she faced en route to her third career shutout after posting two last season as a sophomore.

“She was real solid all the way through tonight,” Durocher said, applauding Schroeder’s strong outing. “She stayed very correct on the initial saves and was in position to recover on the rebounds.”

Schroeder’s best work came on the penalty kill as UCONN was able to generate a whopping 11 shots on just three power play opportunities. The save of the night came with just over five minutes left in the final frame as Morgan Wabick danced around Kaleigh Donnelly only to be met by the pads of Schroeder.

“One of the underlying storylines was that [UCONN] had three power play opportunities and they generated plenty of shots on the power play, which made our jobs and Corinne’s job a little tougher,” Durocher continued. “We generated most of our opportunities at 5-on-5.”

After some chaos in front of UCONN netminder Morgan Fisher, senior Deziray De Sousa cleaned up the loose change for the lone goal of the game, her fifth career game-winning goal, putting the Terriers up 1-0 late in the second period.

“It’s great, and we’ve got to continue to have that second wave of people to get that confidence,” Durocher noted about the depth contribution from De Sousa. “Hopefully Deziray’s goal can get us going in the right direction there.”

Senior defender Abby Cook recorded the helper on De Sousa’s goal. Cook’s assist marks her third point in four games this season and her second-straight game-winning assist; sophomore Courtney Correia notched the secondary assist.

Fisher stopped 25 of the 26 shots she faced in the loss for the Huskies. The Terriers will head to Maine (2-2-1, 0-1-0 WHEA) for a matinee showdown on Sunday. The action is set to kick off at 2:00 pm; stay tuned for WTBU Sports’ preview.
