Soccer: Against Harvard, BU women come up short, men extend win streak

In a men’s and women’s soccer doubleheader between BU and Harvard at Nickerson Field, the schools split the two-game set, as Harvard earned the win in the women’s game and BU got their revenge in the men’s game.

In the opener, the BU women were outshot 25-4 by the Crimson, but held on early thanks to goalkeeping heroics from Emma Heil. The visitors would eventually cash in though, scoring just before the break through Jordan Di Verniero and then doubling the lead shortly after halftime off the foot of Gabby DelPico. The two goals would be all Harvard would need, blanking BU for their fifth consecutive shut-out.

With the men’s teams taking the field, a scoreless first half set the stage for a dramatic final 45 minutes in which the Terriers struck twice in two minutes with goals from Zion Balogun and Marc Roura coming in the 59th and 61st minutes respectively. BU would see the game out from there, and after going winless through their opening ten games, they have suddenly run off three wins in a row against respectable opposition.

With these meetings with Harvard concluding both squads’ non-conference slates, this weekend will mark the beginning of four critical Patriot League contests for both teams to conclude the season. On Saturday, the BU women will look to turn things around on home turf against Colgate at 2pm, while the men will aim to keep their streak alive when they travel to Bucknell for a 1pm kickoff on Sunday.
