Women’s Hockey: No. 8/9 Terriers win season opener at Union

SCHENECTADY – In their first game of the 2019-2020 season, the Boston University Terriers (1-0-0) earned the victory after defeating the Union College Dutchwomen (0-4-0) by a score of 2-1.

The game remained scoreless through most of the first period until last season’s leading goal-scorer, redshirt senior captain Sammy Davis, put one in to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Davis would come through again in the second period on a power play by scoring her second goal of the game to make it 2-0 Terriers.

This goal would prove to be the decisive point as the Terriers would limit the Dutchwomen to one goal, freshman forward Leah Herrfort’s first of her career, for the rest of the game bringing the contest to its final score of 2-1. To see Davis score two for BU was nothing new to Terrier fans or to head coach Brian Durocher. He highlighted her presence as a “constant power forward” and how she used her great skills with the puck to produce two goals in difficult situations in this game.

The Terriers were without their other major point-scorer, junior forward Jesse Compher, for this game as she was dealing with a “nagging lower-body injury” according to Durocher. Although she had made progress in her recovery, “this week it kind of went in the wrong direction,” Durocher said.

Junior goaltender Corrine Schroeder was on point throughout the entirety of her first game of the season, saving 22 of 23 shots on goal.

“I thought [Schroeder] was real solid when she had to be,” Durocher said. “She controlled almost all the rebounds, didn’t give up any second chances, and gave us another opportunity to get out of there with a win.”

BU’s five freshmen players all saw time on the ice in the game. Freshman forward Haylee Blinkhorn scored her first career point with an assist on Davis’ first goal.

“They all looked like they belonged there,” Durocher said. “They all played and they all showed that they can play.”

Next up for BU is their home opener and first game of Women’s Hockey East play on October 11th against their rival Merrimack Warriors. As for the Dutchwomen, a two-game set against the Lindenwood Lions starting October 18th awaits.

“Not too many championships are won in the first game of the season,” Durocher said. The Terriers have started off on the right foot but have only taken one step into the long season ahead.
