Softball pitch perfect in first Patriot League series
By: Bryan Quigley
The start of the Patriot League slate brought out the best in BU’s pitching this weekend against Holy Cross. When you only give up one run in a three game series, you’re destined for success. Freshman Emily Gant and sophomore Ali DuBois left the Crusaders with nothing to show for in the weekend series.
Gant started the first and third games of the series and appeared to look more and more comfortable as the games progressed. While Gant had plenty of run support in the first game of the series, she would not have the same cushion in the final game. The eight inning thriller caused the freshman pitcher to dig deep in her arsenal and lift her team to a victory.
The highlight of this stellar performance came in the top of the eighth inning when Gant worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game locked in extra innings, which allowed the offense to finally break through for a 2-0 victory. This was a huge game for Gant, as she had to put the team on her back and lead the Terriers to the finish line in what could be a big point of growth in the season that, despite good performances, has resulted with many in the loss column. The freshman is now 4-7 on the year with only a 2.16 ERA. This discrepancy shows the competition she has faced and how her win count is destined to see a major leap as Patriot League play commences.
As for Ali DuBois, it appears to be more of the same for the stellar sophomore. She got the start in game two and never looked back. DuBois threw a two-hitter against the Crusaders and dominated the entire game with almost no scoring threats for Holy Cross. It was one of those games where you just knew she wasn’t going to give the other team a chance and make it an easy job for the offense to get enough done and take a rest in the back-to-back. DuBois improved to 12-6 on the year with a 1.59 ERA and looks to continue her dominance as league play continues this weekend with a three game series against Lehigh. The Terriers’ next tilt is this Wednesday at 4PM against Boston College where the BU pitching staff will look to continue their dominance from this weekend.
