Women’s Hockey: Terriers win shootout thriller in Beanpot semifinals

CAMBRIDGE- Less than a day after their men’s hockey brethren were eliminated in a 2-1 overtime loss to Northeastern, The BU women’s hockey team overcame the Huskies defeating the No. 3 team in the country 4-3 in a shootout at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center to advance to the Beanpot championship.
Through the first 10 minutes of the game, no goals had been scored as the Terriers missed out on some chances and the Huskies had few opportunities to pounce on. That all changed 11 minutes in as defender Skyler Fontaine slipped the puck right past Terrier goalie Corrine Schroeder to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Early on in the second period, freshman Mackenna Parker tipped in a slapshot from Breanna Scarpaci to tie the game up a 1-1. But the tie didn’t last long, as forward Veronika Pettey gave the Huskies another lead 3 minutes later on a power play to make it 2-1 Huskies.
However, fear not as just three minutes after that, on a power play of their own, redshirt-junior captain Sammy Davis tipped in a shot from defender Abby Cook to tie the game back up at 2.
The third period started with a bang as just 17 seconds in, Huskies leading scorer Alina Mueller scored to give Northeastern their third lead of the night at 3-2, but Terriers leading scorer Jesse Compher responded quickly tying up the game on a breakaway goal at 2:12. The goal was challenged but upheld, and with that we were tied up at 3-3, and things would remain that way which meant overtime at the first semi-final game.
After the 5 minute overtime had elapsed, with many strong rallies by both teams coming up just short, we headed to a shootout in order to send one team to the championship.
The Huskies started off with redshirt senior Tori Sullivan, who’s shot was shot by Schroeder. In response, Sammy Davis sought her second goal of the night but shot too high. Alina Mueller was back at it again swinging the puck past Schroeder to give the Huskies an advantage. Compher countered for BU, but Huskies goalie Aerin Frankel stopped another to keep Northeastern’s advantage alive.
For round three, Northeastern’s second highest point scorer, freshman Chloe Aurard shot but was stopped by Schroeder. Now down to their last shot, sophomore forward Nara Elia put one in past Frankel to complete the three rounds of shootout tied at 1.
In the fourth round, it was forward Veronika Pettey who shot for the Huskies, but she too was blocked by Schroeder and then defensive captain Reagan Rust sent all the Terriers fans home happy sinking a missile into the top-right corner of the goal past Frankel to seal the victory for BU.
Next up for the Terriers, a quick home-game against Holy Cross before they return to Bright-Landry to face the Harvard Crimson, who upset Boston College 4-1 to advance to the championship, next Tuesday on their home turf for the 2019 Women’s Beanpot Title.
