Men’s Basketball: Terriers swept by American

For the second straight year, the Boston University men’s basketball team has been swept by the American University Eagles. Despite junior Max Mahoney’s 24 point, 13 rebound effort, the host Terriers could not hold off American, falling 70-66.

On Wednesday at Case Gym, the Terriers (9-11, 2-5) fell behind to the Eagles (9-9, 3-4) by double digits at the first media timeout. While they battled back and eventually retook the lead, American held on. Boston University head coach Joe Jones pointed at the Terriers 18 turnovers as their downfall.

“That was the difference in the game,” Jones said. “We didn’t take care of the ball, and we obviously had some costly ones.”

The player of the game was American junior Sa’eed Nelson. The Preseason Patriot League Player of the Year poured in a game-high 26 points to go with six assists, five steals, four rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Terriers have fallen in four times in their last five games.

“We’ve just got to get over the hump,” Jones said. “Obviously this has been a tough stretch for us, and we just have to get back to playing with confidence.”
