Women’s Hockey: Terriers complete weekend sweep of Holy Cross

BOSTON – The Boston University Terriers (13-6-5, 10-5-4 WHEA) completed their second straight weekend sweep of a Hockey East foe, defeating newcomer Holy Cross (1-21-3, 1-17-1 WHEA) in a home-and-home series. The Terriers’ hot streak continues as they improve to 10-2-1 since November 20, 2017, a 4-3 loss to No. 10 Boston College.

The series kicked off on Friday night as head coach Brian Durocher and his Terriers traveled to Worcester in a 4-1 victory.

Both sides skated to a 1-1 tie after the first 20 minutes of action as Jesse Compher got the scoring started on the power play before Victoria Young answered for Holy Cross with a power play goal of her own. Abby Cook and Kaleigh Donnelly assisted on Compher’s goal.

The Terriers came out flying for the second period as Mary Grace Kelley scored the eventual game winner to put the Terriers up 2-1 before Alex Allan and Courtney Correia tacked on the final two goals of the game. Connor Galway had two assists while Rachel Allen and Kristina Schuler both had one assist apiece as well.

Freshman goaltender Kate Stuart stopped 15 of the 16 shots she faced on her way to earning her third victory of the season.

The two sides returned to action for a Saturday afternoon matinee at Walter Brown Arena, a contest that saw the Terriers win in blowout fashion with a 7-1 final.

BU exploded for four goals in the first period before adding three more in the second frame. Sammy Davis (1G, 1A), Jesse Compher (2A), Natasza Tarnowski (2G), Courtney Correia (1G, 2A), Reagan Rust (1G, 1A), Mackenna Parker (1G, 1A), and Kaleigh Donnelly (2A) each had multi-point efforts. Deziray De Sousa chipped in with a goal of her own while Brianna Scarpaci, Abbey Stanley, and Abby Cook tallied helpers as well.

Holy Cross finally answered in the second period as Rachel Moore scored on the power play, but it was too little too late as that put the score at 5-1 in favor of BU at that point in the game.

Sophomore goaltender Corinne Schroeder played the first two periods, making 18 saves on 19 shots and even had an assist on the final goal en route to her tenth win of the season, and fourth-straight victory.

Freshman net-minder Nicole McGuigan played the third period, stopping all three shots she faced.

The Terriers are back in action next Friday, January 25th, at 7PM as the Merrimack College Warriors (14-8-3, 10-7-1 WHEA) visit Walter Brown Arena to kick-off another Hockey East home-and-home series.
