Women’s Hockey: Terriers complete weekend sweep of No. 8 Friars

BOSTON- The Boston University Terriers (11-6-5, 8-5-4 WHEA) achieved their second weekend sweep of a top-10 ranked opponent on the season when they defeated the Providence College Friars (16-6-0, 10-5-0 WHEA) 4-2 on home ice saturday. The other being over the then ranked No. 4 Boston College Eagles.

On Friday night the Terriers traveled down route 93 for a clash with the Friars in Providence. Coach Brian Durocher’s squad beat the Friars 5-3 at Schneider Arena. Sammy Davis’ two goals and Deziray De Sousa’s three points (1G, 2A) highlighted the win.

Saturday afternoon, the two sides took to the ice at Walter Brown Arena to play the second game of the weekend. The matinee contest couldn’t have started any better for the Terriers as they went into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead.

Freshmen forwards had their hands all over the score sheet in the first period as Courtney Correia and Mackenna Parker netted goals and Kaleigh Donnelly added two helpers. The third goal of the first frame went to Terriers captain Natasza Tarnowski.

“Highly competitive game. I thought Providence came out and bottled us up by playing super aggressive and yet we came out of there with a 3-1 lead.” said Coach Durocher. “Great stuff from us. We took advantage of a couple of opportunities in the first.”

The Friars fought back to within one late in the second period, but the Terriers pushed back with the help of Tarnowski as she assisted on the team’s fourth goal of the game.

It was a night to remember for the junior tri-captain Tarnowski as she recorded a career-high three points, which included the eventual game winning goal in the first period.

Corinne Schroeder was sharp all weekend long. For her efforts she took home a 2-0 record, making 26 saves in the win on Friday night and 32 saves on Saturday. The Friars made Schroeder work late in the third period on Saturday she made 17 saves in the final frame with many of them coming in the last three minutes of the game when the Terriers took back to back penalties. Her performance on the weekend commanded praise from Coach Durocher postgame.

“As the last line of defense, Corinne really stepped up over the last six or seven minutes of the third.” said Coach Durocher.

The Terriers will be back in action next weekend when they play a home and home series with Hockey East newcomer Holy Cross.
