Men’s Basketball: Walter Whyte ruled out for the season

Boston University men’s basketball sophomore guard Walter Whyte will miss the remainder of the 2018-19 season season, as confirmed by head coach Joe Jones after BU’s 87-80 win over Bucknell Saturday. Whyte had not appeared in a game all season.

When asked if Whyte is out for the season, Jones said, “he is, unfortunately.”

Jones said he hopes Whyte will earn a medical redshirt for his ailment.

“He had a bone bruise that didn’t heal,” Jones said. “He had some other complications behind that, but that’s what it was.”

It was first reported in early November that Whyte would miss 4-6 weeks. Having not played in a game and only recently shedding a walking boot, it was determined beneficial for the 6-foot-6 slasher to spend the rest of the season recovering.

He will likely save this year of eligibility as a medical redshirt, pending approval from the Patriot League and NCAA.

A Patriot League All-Rookie Team selection last year, Whyte averaged 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game for the season and increased his efforts to 10.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in Patriot League play.
