Women’s Hockey: Terriers take step in the right direction in win over UConn

STORRS-The Terriers suited up for their first game action in over a week as they visited UCONN for the first time this season in a 4-1 victory Friday evening.

Corinne Schroeder got the start between the pipes for Brian Durocher’s squad, stopping 30 shots and earning her first win of the season. Morgan Fisher made 21 saves for UConn in the loss.

The two sides skated a fairly even first period as UConn outshot the Terriers 8-7 in the first with the Terriers failing to convert their one power play opportunity of the night.

Jesse Compher opened the scoring early at 3:37 of the second period, beating Fisher for her third goal of the season. Abby Cook and Abbey Stanley picked up the helpers on Compher’s tally.

Tristyn Svetek brought the game back to a tie after beating Schroeder at the 14:11 mark of the second with an assist from Catherine Crawley.

Just 47 seconds later at 14:58 of the second, Sammy Davis put the Terriers back up by one with an unassisted goal, her fifth of the season.

Schroeder managed to turn away 11 of 12 shots she faced in the second frame.

The Terriers maintained control of play in the final frame as Jesse Compher scored her second of the game, short-handed, 6:44 into the third, putting the Terriers up 3-1. Sammy Davis and Breanna Scarpaci assisted on Compher’s fourth of the season.

At 18:55 of the third period, Sammy Davis sealed the deal with an empty-net goal, her sixth of the season; assisted by Jesse Compher and Abbey Stanley.

Corinne Schneider stopped all ten shots she faced in the third period as the Terriers killed all four of UConn’s power play opportunities, improving to 2-3-3 overall on the season and in Hockey East play. UConn falls to 5-5-1 on the season with the loss.

Jesse Compher and Sammy Davis each had 3-point nights (2G, 1A each) as Abbey Stanley had two assists.

Durocher and the Terriers return to action next weekend as they host Vermont (2-5-3) Friday night and Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.
