Terrier Tribune: Shannon Keefe Chapter 4 – “Heading towards the Patriot League Tournament”

Dear BU Soccer Fans,

This is a big week for BU women’s soccer. We travel to Hamilton, New York to take on top-seed Colgate on Saturday at 12 p.m. A win will put us in first place in the Patriot League, allowing us to host the conference tournament the following weekend for the first time since 2015. We are currently sitting in second place with 20 points, in front of Navy with 18 and Bucknell with 15. As regular-season conference play starts to wind down, we are finally getting to the most exciting part of the season. After this weekend, each game has the ability to end our season, but it also has the potential to push us through to the next round. This is the part of the season we work all year for.

Since I last updated you, we have played five conference games and our final non-conference game of the regular season. Following our exhilarating 3-0 victory against Holy Cross, we beat Lafayette 2-0 on September 29th with both goals coming from freshman Taylor Kofton. It was really cool to watch her score her first and second career goals because she has been a force for us in the midfield, especially on corner kicks—which is how she scored both goals.

Our next game was arguably the biggest game of the season thus far. On Friday October 5th, we hosted Navy on Nickerson Field. During preseason, the Patriot League named Navy as the “favorite” to win the league. There’s nothing better than playing at home on a Friday night against a team like Navy. We won the game in the 87th minute on another stellar goal from Kofton.

We wrapped up our out-of-conference schedule with a mid-week game across the Charles River against Harvard. Although they went up first, we answered quickly and brought the game into overtime. Freshman Lauren Adelman scored off a corner kick to give us the win. A few days later, we travelled to Baltimore to take on the Loyola Greyhounds—we won 1-0, and our winning streak extended to seven.

Our most recent games on Nickerson Field were against Army, a 1-1 tie and a 2-0 win over Bucknell.  The Bucknell game was a big for us because not only are the Bison two-time reigning Patriot League champions, but it was also senior day. Our team has so many traditions, but one of the biggest ones is all of the senior day festivities. The freshmen are responsible for picking a theme and decorating the locker room, and as coach said, “they hit a home run on this one.” Our senior class this year is a really special group. They bring so much to this team, both on and off the field, and all the underclassmen look up to them so much. Our team this year is so close, and the seniors are responsible for it, so it was really great to get a good 2-0 win for them on their special day.

Like I mentioned earlier, we are closing out our last regular season game at Colgate this weekend. A win will not only secure us to host the tournament, but it will be the first time since 2015 and only the second time in BU women’s soccer history that we would become regular season champions.
