Women’s Hockey: Terriers Top Durham West in Lone Preseason Tune-up
Boston– Coach Brian Durocher definitely got the most out of his team Friday night when they took to the ice in a 7-0 victory over the Durham West Lightning of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League.
There was a noticeable mindset from Coach Durocher, who just began his 14th season as the head coach of the Terriers, he wanted to get all of his players a chance to get their legs loose in some real competition, and let creativity take over on offense.
No single line was leaned on anymore than the others. All four lines were given near equal time on ice, and the Terriers displayed that this years team will be far less reliant on one line pulling the weight scoring the puck.
All 18 skaters got the chance to handle the puck on Friday night, and that shows in the box score. The Terriers had seven different goal scorers on Lightning goaltending.
And the Terriers wasted no time.
In the first period it didn’t take long before everyone inside Walter Brown Arena noticed that Terriers were buzzing on the ice. Then when the team was granted a power play opportunity just six and a half minutes into play, the Terriers wasted no time at all. The Terriers power play unit set up shop in the offensive zone and through some flawless puck movement Abbey Stanley ended up with some space at the blueline. And to callback a favorite line of Coach Durocher, the puck had eyes and made its way around the traffic the Terriers parked in front of the net. The official mark was Stanley at 6:58 of the first period, assisted by Reagan Rust and Deziray De Sousa.
After the early strike both teams settled in to the flow of play, but it was obvious that the Terriers were getting the better of the opportunities. The team broke through with their second goal of the period at the 15:15 mark when De Sousa scored and notched her second point of the night. De Sousa’s tally was assisted by Kaleigh Donnelly and Jesse Compher. The helper was Donnelly’s first collegiate point.
The Terriers wasted no time striking again before the end of the first. This time it was the captain, redshirt junior Sammy Davis. This was Davis’ first goal in over a year. She spent the 2017-18 campaign on the sidelines due to injury. The goal was assisted by Rachel Allen and Courtney Correia. This was also Correia’s first collegiate point.
The first continued for the Terriers freshmen. In the second period the team tacked on two more goals, which featured another pair of freshman notching their first collegiate points. The first was scored by junior captain Natasza Tarnowski. He goal was assisted by Breanna Scarpaci and Nara Elia. The second mark of the period went to Kristina Schuler. Her goal was assisted by two freshmen; defender Alex Allan and Mackenna Parker.
In the third it was just more Terriers. Now the freshman Correia strikes for her first collegiate goal. On a two on one rush where the she was beautifully served the puck from Davis. The seventh and final goal came from Compher.
The team’s 7-0 shutout victory featured a full team effort. All the way down to the goaltenders. All three goaltenders were featured in the game, all playing a frame a piece. The goaltender trio of sophomore Corinne Schroeder who picked up the win making four first period saves, followed by freshman goaltender Nicole McGuigan who added another four saves before giving way to another freshman, Kate Stuart who saved all six shots she faced in the third period.
