Women’s Soccer: Keefe sisters compete on Nickerson pitch

BOSTON — There were a few extra elbows, but also hugs between a pair of Patriot League rivals on Saturday. Subtle in the midst of Boston University’s first conference win of the season, Terrier junior Shannon Keefe and Lehigh University freshman Erin Keefe matched up on the pitch.

The Terriers (2-7-2, 1-0-1 Patriot League) bested the Mountain Hawks (3-6-0, 0-2-0 Patriot League) on a eighth minute goal by senior Chelsea Churchill.

It was the first time the Keefe sisters have played against each other — ever.

“It was pretty weird because we’re used to passing to each other the ball,” Erin said. “We’ve been counting down the days to see each other again and we’re finally here.”

But the younger sister did support her BU sister.

“She told me ‘good job’ when I came off the field,” Shannon said.

Shannon nearly scored on a breakaway with the keeper coming out deep in the box in the 54th minute. The elder Keefe played 42 minutes at forward, her younger sister 47 on the back line. Each played a pivotal role for their respective teams.

The Basking Ridge, New Jersey natives had their parents and family in the stands. Instead of having to choose which of the sisters’ games to attend, it was a full family affair.

“It’s cool because our parens are either at Lehigh or one’s here and one’s there,” Shannon said. “It’s nice that we’re all together.”

As sisters do, they’re making sure to offer the utmost support for each other. Erin said they talk about “mostly sister stuff.” Not so much soccer, but the life of a college student.

“Just checking in to make sure she’s OK,” Shannon said. “The transition from high school to college is obviously a tough one. With fitness testing, getting frustrated with playing time and stuff like that. Just telling her to keep her head up, stuff like that.”
