Field Hockey: Terriers suffer first loss of 2018

BOSTON – On the final day of August, the Boston University Terriers played host to the University of Maine Black Bears for their home opener on Friday at New Balance Field.

The Terriers (2-1) fell in a 2-0 hole and could not come all the way back against the Black Bears (2-0) in a 2-1 defeat.

“They outworked us a lot today,” said Boston University head coach Sally Starr. “They won the 50-50 balls, they cut back harder for the ball, just basic grittiness.”

Coming off a weekend sweep at New Hampshire’s Wildcat Classic, the Terriers fell behind 2-0 and trailed for the first time all season.

Maine scored on their first penalty corner attempt, and Riley Field added a nifty goal to double the lead with under 15 minutes to play. The Black Bears carried the momentum from their season opening 9-1 drubbing of Holy Cross.

Terrier freshman Casey Thompson’s second goal of the season helped slash the deficit in half with 4:57 left. She redirected a shot from senior Kara Enoch off a penalty corner to trim the lead.

“At times we played some good hockey as well,” Starr said.

Utilizing a kicking back, BU scored their first goal but could not get another tally.

“We just didn’t take good enough care of the ball in our attacking third as well as we could have,” Starr said. “We definitely created the opportunities, but I think we were careless with the ball in our attacking third.”

Up next: BU hosts Ohio State on Monday September 1 at 1:00 p.m.
