Women’s Soccer: Terriers to Traverse Kenmore Square Still in Search of Victory

BOSTON, MA  –  When the Terrier women arrive at Parson’s Field to bout with Northeastern on Thursday evening, they will bring with them a four-match losing streak. But Scarlet and White fans have seen this sort of start to the season before—quite recently, in fact.

In 2016, the Terriers lost their first ten matches of the season, conceding 21 goals and scoring two. Fans were likely left screaming bloody murder—that is, until their team went undefeated, with a record of 9-0-1, through the second half of the campaign and advanced to the Patriot League finals. So, as history has shown, an 0-4 start to this year is not exactly cause for extreme concern.

That being said, Head Coach Nancy Feldman and her players still have their eyes on taking down the Huskies.

The Terriers’ schedule up until now has been populated by highly ranked teams from prestigious conferences; in Northeastern, the Terriers have their first shot at a more beatable opponent. BU leads all-time at 12-6-1, and recovered from four consecutive losses to the Huskies with a 2-1 triumph a season ago.

BU Midfielder Anna Heilferty and center back Royce Light have combined to grab the Terriers’ two goals this season; forward McKenna Doyle holds the only assist. Heilferty has been by far the most aggressive player on the pitch, having already taken 12 shots (an average of four per game)—making her the only Terrier with double digits in that statistic so far. On the defensive end, doubts remain as to who the starting center back pairing will be.

Northeastern comes in at 1-3 on the season, having lost their last three matches after an opening victory against Connecticut. Seven different Huskies have recorded points; among them is Hannah Rosenblatt, who led last season in points (19) and goals (8). The Terriers, however, are more likely to remember the goal she put past them last year, as well as her assist in 2016’s 2-0 defeat.

BU retains two goalscorers of their own: Midfielder Julianna Chen netted the game-winning goal in last season’s contest, and her fellow senior Doyle scored as a freshman in 2015’s contest.
