Chris Gray Wins Patriot League Rookie of the Year

Boston University lacrosse attack Chris Gray will need to clear some space on his mantle.

The Wading River, N.Y. native became the first Terrier in program history to receive Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors on Monday. Gray was also the only freshman to be named to the All-Patriot League First Team.

The award comes as little surprise. Gray was third in the conference in points (59) and points per game (4.21), sitting behind only Pat Spencer of Loyola and Will Sands of Bucknell. Gray also finished third in the league in assists (34) and assists per game (2.43) behind the aforementioned pair of point-getters. Overall, Gray ranked 10th in the entire country in assists per game and 20th in points per outing.

Gray first carved out a reputation for himself with a two-goal, eight-assist outburst against Harvard on March 20. The Terriers fell to the Crimson, 19-18, but Gray’s assist total was tied for the highest single-game output in the Patriot League all season with the eight Spencer accumulated three days earlier against Navy.

On the season, Gray has recorded 25 goals to accompany his 34 assists, making him the first freshman to exceed 30 assists in the team’s half-decade existence. He has piled up three hat tricks on the campaign, including a monumental three-goal, two-assist performance in a 9-4 win over Holy Cross last Friday that punched the Terriers’ ticket to the Patriot League conference tournament.

Gray also put up three goals and four assists in a loss to Bucknell on St. Patrick’s Day, a good sign given the Terriers are headed to Lewisburg, Pa. for a Patriot League quarterfinal matchup with the Bison on Tuesday night. That showing came a week after he destructed Colgate for a hat trick and two assists and a month after he put up the same stat line in a home win over Dartmouth.
