WBB Coach May Be Named ‘By the End of the Week’

It’s been nearly a month since Boston University Athletics announced Katy Steding would not be returning as head coach of the women’s basketball program. It now seems as if the wait to see who will be taking the steering wheel next is almost over.

Sources told WTBU Sports that the new head coach could be officially named by week’s end. The hiring team met with two of it’s final choices on campus on Monday and Tuesday. The names and how many applicants are still in the running were not disclosed at the time.

Lauren Spearman, a rising-senior point guard, said her teammates and she hope the new coach wants to build mutual respect between the players and the coaches, and can communicate well on a consistent basis.

“Communication is key,” said Spearman, “It ensures that we’re on the same page with all of our goals and everything moving forward.”

During the first month of a head coach-less offseason, the Terriers have been working directly with assistant coach Jenny Thigpin, the only currently retained member of the Steding coaching staff. It is still unclear whether or not Thigpin is a finalist for the top spot.

Spearman noted that Thigpin has been “amazing” in making the transition process a smooth one for the players, all the while helping them improve their skills everyday.

“She’s been working with us to build our confidence levels in our own abilities,” said Spearman. “Next season we’ll have the confidence to take and make good shots, while also being able to keep people in front of us on the defensive end.”

Thigpin, a former star basketball player for Fresno State and Arizona State, has Division II head coaching experience at Dixie State University. The California-native led the Trailblazers to a 17-35 overall record over two seasons at the helm.
