Terriers Make Headlines in Troy Cox Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A weekend that was slated for five games saw the Terriers only get three in, as they lost their scheduled Friday doubleheader against Ball State and New Mexico State due to heavy rain.

In the three games the Terriers did play they went won one game and lost two. However, the headline maker coming from this weekend happened in the latter half of Saturday’s games. The Terriers shocked the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Oklahoma.

In the second game of the weekend, the Terriers bested the two-time defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners by a score of 4-3. Sophomore pitcher Lizzie Annerino got her first career win in her 4 2/3 innings of relief. Annerino held the Sooners to only four hits, while a sacrifice fly from senior Kaitlin Sahlinger provided the Terriers with the game-winning run. The win was BU’s first against a top-ranked opponent.

In game one earlier on Saturday, the Terriers started the scoring against Ball State by nabbing an early run in the top of first. Their early jump was quickly answered by Ball State, who put up four runs in the bottom half of the opening inning.

Both teams settled in after that point. The Terriers scored another run in the second to cut the lead to two, and then took the lead in the fifth after a combination of two Cardinal errors and a hit batsman was followed by a Brittany Younan RBI single.

However the Terriers gave up another pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 6-5, where it stood at the end of the contest.

In the final game of the weekend, the Terriers dropped a 2-1 game against New Mexico State. The Terriers allowed two runs in the first inning, and held New Mexico scoreless the rest of the way; however, the Terrier offense could never get BU back in the game. The team’s lone run came in the fifth on a Madi Killebrew single. Freshman pitcher Ali Dubois received the loss.

The Terriers now sit at 4-4 on the season. The team will enjoy a week off from games before they head on a cross-country trip to play in a series of tournaments in California. First the San Diego Classic from Mar. 2-6 and then the Louisville Slugger Tournament in Long Beach, Calif. from Mar. 8-10.
