Seven Unanswered Goals Results in Big Loss for Field Hockey

No. 20 Boston University Field Hockey added to its losing streak on Sunday, this time after an 8-1 loss to the No. 1 University of Connecticut Huskies. The Terriers have now dropped their third straight game after a 4-0 start to the season.

The now 7-0 UConn offense has been firing on all cylinders in 2017, and Sunday was no exception. A team that averages just over 20 shot attempts per game, outshot BU 23-4, turning eight into points.

As they have been able to do almost all year, the Huskies were able to keep penalty corner situations in their favor, holding a 9-2 advantage over BU.

Freshman forward Miya Denison grabbed the only goal for the Terriers on the day, coming in the 11th minute of play. The rebound and putback places Denison alongside freshman Ailsa Connolly in first for total team goals, with three on the season.

BU was unable to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game, allowing UConn to push the tempo and finish on a 7-0 scoring run. The Huskies began to pull away even before halftime due to four quick goals made in the final 10 minutes of the first half.

Senior forward Charlotte Veitner had the hot hand for the Huskies, recording four goals and three assists. The two-time First Team All-American’s performance leaves her with more than double the amount of goals as her next closest teammate, Margot Colenbrander (5).

Terrier goalkeepers Kathleen Keegan and Millie Baker split time perfectly down the middle once again, each finding 35 minutes of action. The high-powered Huskies offense put both Keegan and Baker to the test, as each saw over 10 shot attempts in their respective halves.

Keegan finished with five saves and five goals allowed, with Baker finding a bit more success on four saves and three goals allowed.

BU is in a rut, having been outscored by opponents 13-3 over the last three games. However, the Terriers have much to look forward to now with the longest road trip of the season behind them.

BU will kick off Patriot League play next weekend at home versus Lafayette. The Terriers are a promising 2-0 at New Balance Field in 2017, but they have not played at home since August 27. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23.
