After a thriller in Providence last weekend, Boston University found itself a win in much different fashion. Jumping out to a 3-0 lead and never looking back, the Terriers thwarted UMass Lowell, 18-8.
Led by six points from midfielder Cal Dearth, the Terriers exploded offensively in the first half and didn’t let up. James Burr scored three times after not getting the starting nod, one goal short of his career-high four he scored against the River Hawks last season.
BU scored six goals in a row and eight total in the second quarter to hold a 12-3 lead at the half. Lowell changed goalies with Grant Lardieri being pulled in favor of freshman Tyler Canto, but it wasn’t enough to stop the BU attack.
Kyle Parsons scored his first collegiate goal to open up the third quarter. Right afterwards, Lowell scored three straight tallies to try to shift momentum, but the Terriers didn’t let up.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Terriers dodged two bullets as John MacLean and Ryan Hillburn each went down with apparent injuries but they both did return to the lineup. Later on, the Terriers subbed in their third and fourth string lines of attack and midfield, giving several new faces playing time.
By the end of the game, 13 different Terriers found the back of the net, including Dearth, Burr, Parsons, MacLean, Hillburn, Hayden Ruiz, Drew Lukacs, Henry Lee, Jack Wilson, Michael Carbone, Chad Bell, Craig Zebrowski, Brendan Homire, and Greg Farris.
The game overall was physical, with 14 combined man-up chances and each team scoring just one on the EMO chance.
Christian Carson-Banister made 14 saves in the win, but all four BU goalies got involved in the game, with freshman Joe McSorley making his NCAA debut in the third quarter. He made eight saves and allowed just one goal.
Joe Stucky got the nod at the faceoff dot once again where he won 16 of his 22 draws before Andrew Pugliese made his NCAA debut. Sam Talkow did not play for the second straight contest.
The last time BU had scored 18 goals in a game in 2015 against Mercer and Colgate, the second year of the program. The lineup is as healthy as its been in a long time, and avoiding injury on a snowy field in a game where the River Hawks were laying open field hits is dodging potential trouble.
The Terriers next game on their four game road trip to open the season is at Hartford, a team that defeated BU at Nickerson Field last season.
