Women’s Hockey: Terriers Desperate For Rebound Against Friars

Still searching for their first win of 2017, the Boston University women’s hockey team is struggling to gain ground in Hockey East. After a pair of ties at home against a tough Vermont team, BU will look to claim ground in the league with a home-and-home series against Providence this weekend.

BU opened the season against the Friars, earning an impressive 5-2 victory over Providence at Walter Brown Arena. Samantha Sutherland notched a hat-trick in her first game back after missing the end of last season with a foot injury.

The Friars are fresh off a weekend over Connecticut. On Saturday, Providence scored three goals in the final six minutes of regulation to earn a victory. The following day, PC climbed out to a 3-0 lead before finishing off the Huskies 4-1.

While the Terriers are 0-1-3 in their first four games of the new year, Providence is 3-1-0 with 12 goals scored. BU, however, is missing two key players in Rebecca Leslie and Maddie Elia with upper body injuries.

Providence is led by forwards Cassidy Carels and Brooke Boquist. Combined the two have scored 27 of Providence’s 76 goals this season. Fellow forward Christina Putigna leads the Friars with 12 assists and 100 shots on goal.

The Terriers have seen better production lately from Sammy Davis, whose 19 points is tied for third-most on the team. Junior Victoria Bach leads BU with 16 assists and 120 shots on goal.

The goaltending match-up this weekend will feature senior Victoria Hanson for the Terriers against sophomore Madison Myers for the Friars. Hanson has played in 16 games this season, posting a .933 SV% and a 2.22 GAA. Myers has made 15 appearances, holding a .902 SV% and a 2.73 GAA.

Puck drop on Saturday is set for 2:00 p.m. in Providence and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Walter Brown Arena
