Men’s Hockey: USA Wins Gold over Canada

This was it. After a grueling two weeks of hockey, it came down to the United States and Canada, two North American hockey powerhouses, duking it out for the gold medal. This game did not disappoint. The United States came back from two separate two goal deficits to take the game to overtime and Tyler Parsons made all 5 saves in the shootout to propel the USA to victory.

Thomas Chabot and Bruins prospect Jeremy Lauzon put Canada up 2-0 halfway through the first period and took that lead to the first intermission. Then, the Terriers took to the task. Charlie McAvoy wristed one past Carter Hart to cut the lead in half, then Kieffer Bellows deflected one in to tie the game. Nicolas Roy gave Canada the lead again early in the third period, and Mathieu Joseph’s breakaway proved successful, giving Canada a 4-2 lead. Bellows struck again less than a minute after Joseph’s goal, and Colin White’s deflection tied the game once again.

The game went to overtime, where both nations had chance after chance. Canada had a large two minute power play when the USA had too many men on the ice, but couldn’t convert. Jordan Greenway had multiple chances to stuff the puck in from the net mouth and couldn’t. Greenway ended the night with an assist on McAvoy’s goal.

Denver University’s Troy Terry got the lone goal in the shootout, while Parsons stood tall against every Canadian shooter to give the United States its fourth gold medal in team history.

Clayton Keller ended the tournament with the team lead in scoring with 11 points, Greenway in second with eight, McAvoy with six, Bellows with three, and Harper with one. Dante Fabbro ended the WJC with one point for Canada.

The players participating in Frozen Fenway on Saturday will travel back to Boston on a 5a.m. bus and practice with the team on Friday morning.
