Men’s Hockey: Greenway Sneaks USA Past Swiss in Quarterfinals

After taking in first place in Group B, the United States World Junior Team had to face a stingy Switzerland team to start the quarterfinals at the World Junior Championship. With help from three BU Terriers, the United States escaped with a hard fought 3-2 victory.

The United States was outshot 21-17, but goaltender Tyler Parsons made some incredible saves in the victory.

The scoring started with Jeremy Bracco one-timing a Tage Thompson feed on the power play in the first period to put the United States up, 1-0. Jordan Greenway nabbed an assist and his first point of the night by fighting to pass a puck to fellow Minnesota Wild draft pick Luke Kunin, upping the American lead to two.

Nico Hischier took over the game from there, scoring two goals to even the score. First, he walked around Charlie McAvoy on the power play, then in a literal sea of humanity, he wrapped the puck around to an empty stick side to tie the game at 2-2.

It would be BU Terrier Jordan Greenway who gave the United States the lead for good only 18 seconds after the Swiss equalized. Clayton Keller passed the puck to McAvoy, whose shot corralled in front of the Swiss net for Jordan Greenway to sweep the rebound in past Joren van Pottelberghe.

Next, the United States take on Russia in the semifinals on January 4th. The two already faced off in group play, with the US taking a 3-2 victory on December 29th.
