Men’s Hockey: Terriers Crush Yale 5-2

Heading into the break, the Terriers needed to end on a high note, and that’s exactly what they did with a 5-2 victory over Yale. Sophomore defender Shane Switzer scored his first two career goals while Clayton Keller and Bobo Carpenter each added two points in the victory.

“We think we have guys that can play that maybe haven’t played a lot of hockey,” head coach David Quinn said on Switzer getting involved. “We’ve always liked Shane as a player, we think we got depth on the blue line, and I think we proved it tonight.

“It’s a great group. I love coming to the rink every day with them. They work hard, they care for each other, they’re forming some of those characteristics you need to have as a group to win important games in late March and April. We feel really good about where we’re at.”

BU jumped out to a quick start and didn’t look back, leading 5-1 heading into the final frame. A 22 shot opening period for the Terriers set the pace and forced Yale to switch goalies by the start of the third period.

“It’s really important to finish on a strong note,” Switzer said, following his career game. “The second half of the season is so important and to go into it with a win is really good.”

Charlie McAvoy found the back of the net first about midway through the opening period on a pass from Jordan Greenway, and that opened the scoring floodgates. Switzer’s first tally extended it to a 2-0 lead late into the first.

Bobo Carpenter scored his fourth tally of the year moments into the second period to extend the lead to 3-0. Clayton Keller, back in his first home game since injury, quickly made that a four goal lead.

Yale would find the board twice but Switzer scored his second tally to put the game away and a 5-2 victory for the Terriers to hold onto heading into the extended break.

“You look at the first half and 10-5-2, 4-2-2 in the league, and I think we just went up to four in the Pairwise rankings,” Quinn said. “It’s been a really good first half for us. We feel our best hockey is ahead of us.”

BU will be back at Agganis on January 5th to face Union College.
