Men’s Hockey: Terriers Swept By Pioneers, Lose 3-1

On Saturday, October 15th, the No. 2 Boston University Terriers couldn’t come back again versus the No. 10 University of Denver Pioneers, losing 3-1. Freshman Kieffer Bellows scored his first ever collegiate hockey goal, but Henrik Borgstrom’s first two goals sealed a Pioneers weekend sweep.

The Terriers got off to the stronger start, the shots on goal advantage to BU was 9-3 after the first period. But 1:37 into the second period, Denver struck first. Borgstrom snuck a shot from the bottom of the circle to the right of freshman netminder Jake Oettinger to give the Pioneers the 1-0 lead. That would be all for scoring in the second period, and 0:43 into the third, Bellows found the back of the net when he took a feed from Charlie McAvoy closer to the goal line left of Denver’s Tanner Jaillet, spun to face the net and wristed one that slid into the net on the far side, evening the score. Borgstrom gave the Pioneers the lead for good, when he took a feed from Troy Terry, drove down to the right of Oettinger, and snapped off a backhander that bulged the twine. Tyson McLellan, son of NHL coach Todd McLellan, added an empty net goal with 24.9 seconds left in the third to seal a BU loss.

With a lot of lessons left to be learned, Coach David Quinn and the Terriers come back home this weekend for their first home series, starting with the Sacred Heart University Pioneers on Friday, then the Quinnipiac University Bobcats on Saturday.
