Women’s Hockey: Mary Parker Added to Roster

With 22 players on the roster for opening night in 18 days, head coach Brian Burocher and the Boston University Terriers seemed well set for their exhibition game against the Whitby Wolves the night before.

However, that was not the case.

Today, after settling the paperwork, former Harvard Crimson star Mary Parker will join the Women’s Ice Hockey team as a graduate transfer student. She played three years at Harvard, leading the Crimson in scoring in 2014-15 (17 goals, 22 assists) en route to the NCAA Finals against Minnesota.

Parker is now the eighth newcomer on this roster — junior Nina Rodgers being the lone other transfer (Minnesota). Freshman Deziray DeSouza, Abby Cook, Katie Shannahan, Alexandra Calderone, Natasza Tarnowski, and Breanna Scarpaci join the transfers as newcomers to the roster. In 104 career games at Cambridge, Parker has 43 goals and 48 assists.

Graduate students have a version of the NCAA’s one-time transfer exception that allows them to continue playing their sport. The student-athlete may continue to compete at another university provided (according to http://www.athleticscholarships.net/ncaa-transfer-exceptions.htm):

  1. He/She has graduated with at least a Bachelor’s degree.
  2. He/She has not previously transfered from another four-year university.
  3. He/She would be academically eligible at the previous university.
  4. The previous university states that they have no objection to the transfer.
  5. He/She must be eligible for at least one more year of competition; and
  6. The previous university must not have renewed or offered an academic scholarship for the upcoming year.

Parker fulfills all those requirements, and, therefore, is eligible to play the 2016-17 season as part of Boston University. She will wear the number 15, the same one she had at Harvard. The Noble and Greenough product did not play the 2015-16 regular season; her last game with the Crimson was the 2015 National Championship game, a 4-1 loss to Minnesota. Parker went +/- 0 and had one shot on goal.

The Terriers will open their season against Hockey East opponents Providence College on September 25 at 3 p.m. from Walter Brown Arena.
