Softball: Terriers Outlast Bucknell in Pitcher’s Duel

BOSTON — In a tight, defenseive battle, the Boston University Terriers came away with a 2-1 Patriot League victory over the Bucknell Bison. BU moves to 2-4 in Patriot League play (13-20) while dropping Bucknell to 7-4 (22-17).

Senior pitchers Lauren Hynes and Amanda Fazio took to the circles for their respective teams and each faced the minumum number of batters possible through three innings of work. Sophomore Emma Wong got the lone hit of the triumvirate of work, but was caught stealing second by catcher Christina Martinez.

With Fazio leading off the fourth, the Bison got a leadoff runner on base. The next two batters, Anna Gimmestad and Meghan Kovac, advanced her to third. Jacee Almond knocked her in with a single to left.

Hynes only allowed one hit the rest of the game in a complete seven innings of work, striking out five.

Pitches started to get away from Fazio by the fifth inning. She walked Alex Heinen, who was replaced by pinch runner Yinka Fasehun. Kaitlin Sahlinger’s single advanced her to second, but Hynes grounded to short for a fielder’s choice.

Lauren Hadley saw Fasehun breaking for home and fired to Martinez to get the tag out at home.

After a three-up, three-down bit of work from Hynes, freshman Emily Morrow led off the sixth with a single and Brittany Younan followed suit. Moriah Connolly reached first on a fielder’s choice that got the lead runner, Morrow, at third.

Jilee Schanda stepped into the box and singled past Kovac to score Younan and put Connolly at third. Gabi Martinez flied out to right, allowing Connolly to score the game-winning run.

The next series of games for the Terriers will come Wednesday and Thursday with out-of-conference road games against Bryant an UMass-Lowell, followed by three Patriot League games against Lafayette over the weekend.
