Men’s Ice Hockey: BU’s Season Ends with 7-2 Romp by Denver
By: Jake Reiser
The No. 12 Boston University Terriers season came to a close on Saturday night, as the No. 7 Denver University Pioneers thrashed BU, 7-2.
The Terriers started out on their feet, but a high flying Denver offense, lack of success on the power play and a lack of general momentum sent BU to its season end spiral early in the second period. Even despite two power plays in the first period on a Matt VanVoorhis hold and a Grant Arnold interference, the Terriers couldn’t capitalize on only five man-advantage shots.
At 13:49 of the frame, Evan Janssen took a shot on BU starter Sean Maguire, who left a rebound for Blake Hillman to pot into a wide-open net for his second goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, Dylan Gambrell stepped around the Boston University defense and whipped a backhand shot that found the twine. With 39 seconds left, John MacLeod went to the box for hooking, and that took the game to the end of the first 20 minutes. Both teams ended the first period with 10 shots on net and a 2-0 DU lead.
24 seconds into the second period, Will Butcher fired one through traffic on the power play that made it 3-0 Denver. Matt Marcinew tacked on another goal and that would be the night for Sean Maguire, David Quinn opting to put in sophomore Connor LaCouvee. Evan Janssen wristed a shot on LaCouvee that found its way through to make it 5-0.
In the third, Will Butcher tallied his second power play goal of the season making it 6-0 in favor of Denver.
Danny O’Regan, averaging a point per game in his career, made sure the Terriers wouldn’t get blanked and netted a rebound goal to put BU on the board.
Denver responded quickly as Trevor Moore scored on a subtle backhander give Denver their seventh goal of the night.
In the dying seconds, Mike Moran made his final contribution of his college hockey career and willed a puck past the goal line with 15 seconds to go. But the downtrodden Terriers were sent packing by a Pioneers team that was not entirely superior.
