Men’s Hockey: Notre Dame’s Petersen Shuts Out Terriers

By: Jake Reiser

In their last regular season game of the year, the No. 9 Boston University Terriers were shut out by the No. 19 University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 1-0 After beating the Irish last night, the Terriers looked for the weekend sweep away from Comm Ave. With a win by UMass Lowell to BC earlier in the night, a BU win would have ensured at least a fourth place finish in the Hockey East standings, a regulation win a third place seeding.

The first period was a dominant one for the Terriers, a 13-7 shots on goal advantage after the beginning frame. It was clean as well, until Steven Fogerty went to the box for interference at 19:31.

Boston University netminder Sean Maguire would be challenged a lot more in the second period. After a Jordan Gross penalty, Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson would go to the box for interference, and unfortunately, the Terriers would let in a soft goal. Thomas DiPauli crashed the net, distracting Maguire just enough to let Dylan Malmquist deflect a shot of the heel of Maguire’s paddle and into the net. BU had another late period power play with a Mario Lucia trip on Charlie McAvoy, but McAvoy skated to the box on his own tripping call just 18 seconds later.

Notre Dame starter Cal Petersen was tested throughout the entire game, but none more so than the third period. Stopping point blank chances twice from Danny O’Regan, he made 39 shots in the entire game. BU pulled Maguire with just over one minute to go, but it would not be enough to get them on the board.

With the loss, the Terriers drop to the fifth seed in the Hockey East standings. They will not have a bye and host the University of Massachusetts Amherst at Agganis Arena in two weeks.
