Men’s Lacrosse: Terriers Comeback to Top UMass Lowell

The Boston University men’s lacrosse team stormed back in the second half of its contest against UMass Lowell on Friday to win its second game of the season, 8-5. A seven goal second half, along with goaltender Christian Carson-Bannister holding the River Hawks to just one goal, went a long way in the Terriers beginning their season 2-0.

James Burr led the way once again, scoring four goals to contribute half of the tallies on his own. Jack Wilson also contributed two goals along with two assists on the afternoon.

Cal Dearth wasn’t to be seen after the first half, and it was Sam Tenney who stepped in the midfield along with Adam Schall and Brendan Homire. Tenney scored his first goal of the season, and Tristian Ruh, also seeing midfield time, picked up his first career on the assist of Tenney’s goal.

Carson-Bannister starred in net, especially in the second half, as BU once again held an opponent to just five scores. He made nine saves overall.

“They were really prepared and excited and  similar to us last year, when we were unhappy with our record and ready to prove to the world that they were better than that.” BU head coach Ryan Polley after the game. “They took it to us in the first half, and without Carson-Bannister it could have been a 8-1 game going into the half.”

UMass Lowell went up early in this game, 3-1, but Burr was able to get BU on the board before the second half so that the Terriers were not shut out in the first two quarters. Burr scored again early in the second half on an extra man opportunity before Tenney scored to cut the lead to two for the River Hawks.

“We needed it, we needed someone to step up and make some plays,” Polley said of Burr.

Burr tied the game in the fourth quarter before Greg Farris scored his first goal of the season to give the Terriers their first lead of the contest. It was a reverse of last week against Providence when BU struggled in the fourth quarter to close out the game.

With the 8-5 victory, BU starts out its season 2-0 and will play its first road game on Tuesday night when they travel to North Carolina to face the High Point Panthers.

“Giving up that first goal, we didn’t panic, and the team responded and put some good possessions together.”
