Men’s Ice Hockey: Terriers Knock-Off Riverhakws in Overtime

Jordan Greenway tipped home a shot from just 29 seconds into overtime, giving the Terriers two important Hockey East points in a 2-1 victory.
On Friday night, the Boston University Terriers (17-8-4; 10-4-3 in HEA) took on the UMass Lowell River Hawks (17-6-5; 10-4-4 in HEA) in a heated Hockey East matchup. Both teams are at the top half of the Hockey East Standings with BU sitting in 5th place and UML just edging them out in 4th place.
The first period went scoreless, with BU leading in shots 10-9. BU goaltender Sean Maguire came up with a few tough glove saves to keep the game scoreless. Charlie McAvoy went to the penalty box for a holding call but BU’s struggling penalty killing unit, ranked 35th in the nation, was able to stifle any chances by UML.
In the second period, the Terriers finally got on the board after not scoring since last Friday night’s game at UMass Amherst. Charlie McAvoy sprung Mike Moran up the ice with a beautiful two-line outlet feed that sent Moran alone on a breakaway to score low left pad side on UML goalie Kevin Boyle. It was Moran’s third goal on the year, and the first goal for BU in 107:10.
The third period proved to be the toughest for BU. Sean Maguire left a puck behind the net for BU defenseman John MacLeod to pick up, but miscommunication lead to the puck being stolen by UMass Lowell forward Ryan Dmowski who was able to get the puck on net for a rebound that A.J. White buried into the open net to tie the game at 1-1.
With less than a minute left in the third period, Dmowski took a boarding penalty after sending Doyle Somerby to the ice shaken up. After a frustrating defensive battle by both teams, the game headed to overtime, the second game in a row the Terriers have played past regulation.
Just before the puck drop in overtime, BU fan favorite “Sasquatch” waved the BU flag in the student section that got a massive applaud from the Agganis crowd. 29 seconds later, Terrier Captain Matt Grzelcyk shot took a wrist shot from the point that was skillfully deflected by Jordan Greenway into the net for a power play goal, sending Agganis into bedlam once again.
After overcome a long scoring drought, this game and the two points that BU earned in the 2-1 win looked like a huge weight off of their shoulders.
BU remains in fifth place with 23 points in Hockey East, just one point behind fourth place Lowell, and head to Tsongas Arena to take on the Riverhawks once again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. with valuable points up for grabs.
