2016 Beanpot: Greenline Rivalry History

By: Marisa Ingemi

On Monday night, the Boston University Terriers will face the Boston College Eagles in the final game of the Beanpot tournament.

The two schools are not new foes, as they have a rivalry dating back almost a century. This will be the first time that the Eagles and Terriers will face each other in the Beanpot Final since 2012.

The first time that these two teams played was in 1918, when Boston College defeated the Terriers, 3-1. All time, the two teams have faced each other 269 times. BU leads that all time series 130-121-18, but of late, it has been the Eagles getting the victories. There are a combined 49 Beanpot titles in the 64 years of the tournament existing.

The first game between the opponents in 1918 was the first hockey game in the history of BU’s program, and it was the only contest they competed in that year. The next time the teams faced each other was in 1920, when BC won, 9-0. The Terriers came close in 1923 when it took three overtimes for BC to win. The first time the Terriers defeated BC was in 1924 with the Terriers picking up a 1-0 victory. Ever since 1946, the two schools have played each other at least once a year.

In a period between the end of 1992 and the start of 1996, the Terriers had their most dominance against the Eagles with a 16 game unbeaten streak.

Both teams have each won five national titles, the most recent coming in 2012 when the Eagles won it. BU last won in 2009. In 1978, the Eagles defeated Boston University for the National Championship. They faced one other time in the NCAA playoffs in 2006 with BC upsetting the Terriers, 6-0.

The original rivalry between the two schools was in football in the 1890s, but it ended in the 1960s and eventually BU discontinued its football program. However, while BU and BC do not have any other sports they compete in other than basketball (in different conferences), hockey has kept the spirit of the rivalry alive.
