WJC Watch: JFK Continues Strong Showing

The World Junior Championships continued this afternoon with all four Boston University Terriers in action. Two teams hosting BU talent, Sweden and the United States, advanced to the semi finals of the tournament.

Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson was named the player of the game in Sweden’s 6-0 rout of Slovakia. He picked up two assists in the Saturday morning contest. He has a 68.35 faceoff percentage, good for fourth overall in the entire tournament. He has four points in the tournament, four of which are assists, and 12 shots on goal.

The United States advanced to face Russia, and that means play will continue for BU defensemen Brandon Fortunato and Charlie McAvoy. McAvoy was a big part of a play that led to an Auston Matthews goal against Denmark on December 31st. Fortunato has seen most of his ice time on the power play for the States. The pair has been a part of a defense that has allowed just five goals all tournament. Fortunato has put up one assist overall.

Canada did not fare nearly as well, falling to the host team Finland 6-5. The loss ends the run for Canada, who do not advance for the first time in 18 years, but also for Terrier defenseman Brandon Hickey. In the tournament, Hickey had two penalty minutes, a -1 rating, and six shots on net.
