The World Junior Hockey Championships opened this afternoon and four Boston University men’s hockey players were in action. The United States, with two Terrier defenseman, faced Canada, who boasted BU defender Brandon Hickey.

However the only Terrier to find the back of the net in the tournament’s opening day was forward Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson. The Boston Bruins prospect scored a goal to help team Sweden defeat Switzerland 8-3. Watch the goal below.

Meanwhile, JFK might be needed to step up as one of the main scorers for Sweden with the NHL’s number eight overall pick William Nylander being injured after scoring the first goal of the game for Sweden.

Forsbacka-Karlsson has been playing on the third line for the Swedes, and his goal was the tally that ultimately chased the Swiss goaltender from the game.

Meanwhile, the United States defeated Canada 4-2. Both Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Fortunato did not contribute on the scoresheet, but they did help the USA contain the strong offense of Canada.
