Men’s Basketball: Terriers Dominate in Lowell

By: Matt Doherty

Sharp-shooting guards John Papale and Cheddi Mosely broke out of their slumps on Thursday night in tune to a commanding 80-60 win for the Boston University Terriers over the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks at the Tsongas Arena.

Papale and Mosely combined to go just 4-22 from the three point line in the previous two games, both losses, but on Thursday they went 10-20 from behind the arc leading the Terriers in scoring and to the victory.

Mosely, the sophomore from Jersey City, had a team high 23 points and eight rebounds while the senior Papale chipped in 17 points and joined the BU record books.

With a three pointer late in the first half, Papale reached the 1,000 point milestone for his illustrious career at BU becoming the 34th player in the history of the program to reach the thousand mark.

For the Terriers though, it was a must needed win following a blowout loss to UMass and a tough defeat to Harvard.

BU wasted no time gaining a sizeable lead in this one as they jumped out to a 10-2 margin and never looked back. The Terriers dominated the first half shooting over 60% from the field and from three opening up a 46-23 lead into the break.

Junior forward Dylan Haines made his first start of the season for BU as Justin Alston sat out with an injury. Senior Nathan Dieudonne returned to action and played 19 minutes off the bench after missing the last game due to a coach’s decision.

Eric Fanning also made another impactful appearance off the bench scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds in his second full game back from suspension.

As for UMass-Lowell, the Riverhawks had one of those unforgettable nights that BU has been used to recently. The team from Lowell shot 33% from the field and 21% from three while turning the ball over 16 times.

UMass-Lowell found themselves down by as many as 25 in the first half and could not chip into the BU lead for the rest of the night. Both teams are now 4-5 on the season.

Following two bad losses, a handful of injuries, and different players in and out of the lineup, it has to feel good for Coach Joe Jones’s team to pick up a win on the road.

The impact of Mosely and Papale shooting the ball well also has to feel good for everyone as their offense seems to go through how those two are playing.

The Terriers will look to keep the momentum going and reach the .500 level when they travel to Quinnipiac on Sunday.
