Men’s Basketball: Terriers Go Down Shooting vs Northeastern

A memorable battle brought fans to their feet in the Case Gym on Saturday night as Boston University faced Northeastern to open the college basketball season. Both skilled basketball teams traded points for the duration of regulation and through a tense overtime period. Unfortunately, only one team can walk away victorious and on this night BU came up one big play short. The Huskies rode the hot hand of David Walker, who scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half and overtime, late in the game. They finished the night with Caleb Donnelly hitting a dagger shot with under 10 seconds left on the clock to go up 87-84 and escape Commonwealth Avenue with their first win of the season.

BU put itself in position to win the game with all five starters scoring double digit points. Cheddi Mosely led the team with 19 points, and he hit several crucial three pointers to tie the game or give BU the lead. Justin Alston added 15 points and four assists from the front court, and Nathan Dieudonne put in a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

However, the most impressive performer on the floor for the Terriers was freshman point guard Kyle Foreman. Foreman scored 15 points, dished out seven assists, and collected a steal and a rebound, all while starting his first ever college basketball game and while sitting out for a time after being elbowed in the face. He changed uniform numbers, stopped a nose-bleed, and stepped back on the floor. He and Alston fouled out of the game, but the team stayed close down the stretch of the game with out two starters on the floor.

Both head coaches spoke highly of the each other, further hilighting the respect between these programs and showing how good the games between the crosstown rivals have been of late. Coach Joe Jones gave his team credit for being tough and physical for the duration of the game, but admitted that they need to experiment with lineup situations in practice.

With Alston and Foreman out, Will Goff and Nick Havener played big minutes down the stretch of the game. They played well, but that forced senior Nathan Dieudonne to play at the five, where he hasn’t gotten many reps in practice so far this season.

Despite playing out of position and coming up short, the team still fit together nicely and played an excellent game. Jones called the game one of the best the program has played in the last two years, and the team is only going to get better as the season progresses.
