Women’s Hockey: Eagles Storm Past Terriers With Eight Straight Goals

BOSTON — Boston University (6-5-0, 4-2-0 Hockey East) started this afternoon’s tilt well. They skated with Boston College (11-0-0, 5-0-0 Hokey East) through most of the first 10 minutes of play. Sammy Davis socred her eigth of the year on the power play, marking the first power play goal allowed by BC all season, the first goal scored against BC in the first period all season, the first time BC had trailed all season, and the first goal scored against Katie Burt in over 200 minutes of play.

Unfortunately, that was all the celebrating BU would do. The Eagles fired back on the Terriers second power play, generating more chances shorthanded than BU could with the advantage. Shortly after killing the penalty, Kali Flanagan scored on a rising shot from the blue line that went over Erin O’Neil’s glove and off the back bar of the net.

Co-captain Dana Trivigno got her first assist of the night when she skated by the BU defense by banking the puck to herself off the boards before passing to Lexi Bender for the finish.

BU looked to recover form after the onslaught to end the first and came out strong to start the second. However, that would only delay when BC got their next goal from Andie Anastos, who found the puck loose in the crease while O’Neil and the Terrier defense were still looking for it.

A late penalty to Trivigno looked to give the Terriers life, but all of their efforts at the net were thwarted by the stingy Eagle penalty kill. So stingy, Alex Carpenter pick-pocketed BU at the line and started the 2-on-1 with Haley Skarupa. Carpenter slid the puck to Skarupa who finished to make the score 4-1.

“I think the biggest problem with our defense was that we weren’t very strong on the puck. We had two power plays where we were soft on a puck, they pick-pocket us and they go down and they score. It changed what was a competitive game to a complete mess” head coach Brain Durocher said.

To start the third period, and on that same late second period penalty, Alex Carpenter scored her 15th of the season. As if 5-1 was not enough, Makenna Newkirk scored a natural hat trick to finish the game with a final score of 8-1.

“It’s funny how they’ve played really well in this building and we’ve played well [at Conte Forum]” head coach Durocher said. “That’s a heck of a hockey team that’s not going to be easy for anybody to deal with this year.”

For Tuesday’s rematch at Conte Forum, Sarah Lefort will return from the Four Nations tournament in Sweden. “We can’t expect her to be jumping off that plane and 28, 24 hours later having her legs or necessarily having her A-game” coach Durocher said. Victoria Hanson, who hasn’t played in four games, will start in net for BU Tuesday night.
