BU Lets up Seven in Loss to Northeastern

BOSTON — Coming off two straight losses to Clarkson University last weekend, Boston University needed a win against the Northeastern Huskies (5-1-1, 1-0-0 Hockey East) to regain their early season form. However, seven different Huskies scored and Jordan Juron added a conciliatory goal for a 7-1 final.

From the opening face-off, nothing seemed to go the way of the Terriers. Hayley Masters scored at 5:34 to open the game for her first of the season.

Halle Silva danced across the blue line and sniped her shot above the shoulder of starter Victoria Hanson for Husky goal number two. A minute and twenty seconds later, Paige Savage tipped home Hayley Scamurra’s slapshot on the power play to give the Huskies a 3-0 advantage after one.

“She was still fighting to the end, but it was one of those days whether she was trying too hard or looking at the big picture and not really focused on the puck; there were ones where she knows are within her control and they were getting by her” head coach Brian Durocher said.

BU let in another power play goal, this time from Hayley Scamurra, to start the second. Ten seconds later, Shelby Harrington, the 6’1″ sophomore forward from Bow, New Hampshire, hammered in the fifth Husky goal. Chances for the Terriers were moot throughout the second period as the Huskies continuously blocked shots, notching eight in the second frame.

Maddie Hartman’s point-shot at 19:10 of the second cued “Chelsea Dagger” by The Fratellis on the Matthews Arena speakers. Fitting, as it was the final dagger for Hanson’s night.

“It gives Erin a little bit of a lead in to tomorrow, which is gonna be her turn to play” coach Durocher said.

Jordan Juron scored her first of the year off a 3-on-2 rush play with assists from Maddie Elia and Mary Grace Kelley. The goal marked Elia and Kelley’s first assists on the year, Kelley’s first point, and the Terriers lone goal. Erin O’Neil started the third in relief of Hanson and saved eight of the nine shots she faced.

“We just got ourselves behind the eight ball early on” coach Durocher said.

Tomorrow afternoon, the Terriers are in action against Vermont at Walter Brown Arena. In yet another conference game, “we have to remember some of the things that happened in this game but try and put it behind us.”
