BU Men’s Soccer Hosts Final Non-Conference Foe, Albany
By: Alex Greenberg
The Boston University men’s soccer team welcome the Albany Great Danes to Nickerson Field on Tuesday night looking to start their final home-stand of the regular season with a win.
The Terriers are 9-3-1 and sit in first place in the Patriot League, just ahead of Navy and Colgate.
BU find themselves at the top of the league thanks to a crucial 1-0 overtime win against Patriot League foe Lafayette in Pennsylvania. The Terriers’ golden goal came just under two minutes into overtime. The winner was initially ruled an own goal, but it has since been retroactively changed to give sophomore Danny Foen his first goal as a Terrier.
Albany are 7-6-1 on the year which has them in 4th place in the America East.
They come to Boston having won their last two games. The Great Danes beat Hartford 2-1 on October 14th. The last time they were in action they beat UMass Lowell 2-1 with goals coming from Phillip Persson and Jake Barros.
BU previously beat UMass Lowell 1-0 in a tightly contested affair at the end of September.
The leading scorer in America East, Afonso Pinheiro, is Albany’s main threat. The forward from Sao Paulo, Brazil has 8 goals and 2 assists this season.
One of BU’s main threats, sophomore Anthony Viteri, missed the Lafayette game due to injury and may be unavailable for this one as well.
These two teams last played each other in 2012 when the Terriers dominated the Great Danes and won 2-0 at Nickerson Field.
This is the last non-conference game of the season for BU. Kickoff between BU and Albany is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Nickerson Field.
