Men’s Lacrosse: BU Defeats McGill in Fall Ball

There will not be another Boston University men’s lacrosse game on Nickerson Field again until February. The team got first (and only) fall tune-up on Sunday afternoon when they downed the McGill Redmen 16-4.

The Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association club is undefeated in their own league, sporting a 9-0 record, but that did not mean they were a match for the Division 1 Terriers. BU came out ready to play from the get go, scoring the first three goals of the game within the first four minutes as freshman attackman James Burr, sophomore attack Jack Wilson, and junior midfielderAdam Schaal got the Terriers on the scoreboard.

Connor Goodwin, who has some professional experieince with the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League, broke up the BU streak with a goal of his own with nine minutes left to play in the first quarter. Goodwin ended up with two of the four Redmen goals, the other two coming from Drew Laird and Goose Bolton.

The Terriers dominated the entire game, allowing only four tallies for the Redmen. BU controleld the possession game having multiple offensive possessions that eclipsed two minutes or more.

Goaltender Christian Carson-Bannister started the game and he made three saves in the first half. Freshman ‘keeper Sean McGovern made five saves and impressed in his first BU action, showing a quick stick on top shelf shots.

Burr, another freshman, also shined in the contest with a four goal performance. Wilson, the second leading goal scorer for the Terriers last season, netted three goals, all of which occurred in the first quarter.

Freshman LSM Drew Luckacs scored a goal on the transition and faceoff man Sam Talkow also scored a transition tally.

Overall the Terriers impressed with a dominant showing against the strongest of Canada’s teams. Freshmen such as Burr, McGovern, and Luckacs stood out. Though he didn’t score. Hayden Ruiz also played well all game. Trisitan Ruh, who joined the team for the first time this past week, also appeared on the scoresheet with a fourth quarter tally.

For most of the first half BU went with an offensive attack unit of Burr, Wilson, Schaal, Zebrowski, junior attackman Pat Myers, and freshman attackman/midfielder Brendan Homire. When the regular season begins there will be more from players such as Cal Dearth, Ryan Johnston, and Alec Hoag, who did not see much action in the exhibition.

The Terriers should feel good about their performance. Their best players played well and their freshman showed flashes of what they could be in a very competitive Patriot League this spring.
