BU Women’s Soccer Defeats Hofstra in OT

On a cold Sunday afternoon, the Boston University Terriers (1-4-2) earned their first victory of the season over Hofstra (5-3-0), 2-1, with an overtime goal from Clare Pleuler.

The Terriers struggled at times in the contest with Hofstra, but BU managed to strike first when freshman Dorrie Varley-Barrett headed a cross from Jenna Fisher into the net at the 26th minute mark to take the lead.

That lead would stand into the second half when the game opened up considerably. Hofstra’s Jill Mulholland dominated the field all game and picked up many scoring chances. She finally capitalized on a chance in the 68th minute, scoring a wonder strike from 35 yards to equalize.

The game remained a back-and-forth affair for the remainder of the second half.

Alyssa Parisi kept BU in the game following the Hofstra goal. She made four total saves and defended against an onslaught of Hofstra corners.

Late in the second half, the Pride almost scored what would have been the game winning goal off a dangerous set piece, but the effort struck the post. The rebound caromed right back to Hofstra, but Parisi made a terrific stop to preserve the tie.

At the other end of the field, Hofstra keeper Friederike Mehring made a terrific diving stop on what would have been a Terrier goal in the final minutes of the game.

For the fifth time this season for BU, the game headed to overtime. After the Terriers and Pride both threatened in the opening minutes of the extra frame, Pleuler blasted a curling shot from 25 yards out to give Boston University their first win with her first of the season.

The Terriers will return home on Thursday to face Providence College, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
