Students: Add SSN or ITIN

It is necessary to have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer ID number (ITIN) on file in order to receive most financial aid. If you do not have an SSN or ITIN already on file, you can add it in MyBU Student.

HOW TO ADD SSN OR ITIN

  1. Log in to MyBU Student.
  2. From the left-side menu, select My Profile, and then General Information.
  3. Click Specify on the corresponding row to input your SSN or ITIN accordingly.
  4. Input the number (no need to include any dashes) and click Save.
    1. Be sure to double check before saving – you can only specify your SSN or ITIN once!

It is NOT possible to edit an existing SSN or ITIN in MyBU Student. If you need to correct/edit an SSN or ITIN already on file, contact BU Financial Aid.

FAQ

Why does BU need my SSN?

  • Required for FAFSA: Your SSN is necessary for BU to receive your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Match records: Having an SSN on file helps ensure that all your records can be matched correctly to your financial aid application(s).
  • Student employment: Student employees need a valid SSN for tax purposes.

What is an ITIN?

  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for certain resident and nonresident aliens who are not eligible for an SSN.
  • If you already have an SSN, you do not need an ITIN.
