Aaron Kopp

Aaron Kopp is an award-winning filmmaker and Emmy-nominated cinematographer who grew up in the Kingdom of Eswatini. Aaron shot and co-produced the Oscar-winning film, Saving Face, about acid attacks in Pakistan. He was cinematographer for the Sundance-winning and Oscar-nominated film, The Hunting Ground, about sexual assault on college campuses. He also served as the cinematographer for the Emmy-winning film The Holly, which was executive produced by Oscar-winner, Adam McKay. Most recently, working alongside Mindy Kaling and Priyanka Chopra, Aaron produced the Oscar Nominated film, Anuja, that follows a gifted nine-year-old girl working in a garment factory who gets a rare chance to attend school.

Aaron’s feature directorial debut, Liyana, is a documentary/animated fiction hybrid about orphaned children in Eswatini who transform their experiences into an original story. Executive produced by Thandiwe Newton, Liyana won more than 35 awards worldwide and was released theatrically in more than 50 U.S. markets before premiering on Sundance Now.

His work spans fiction, documentary, television, and commercials for HBO, Netflix, National Geographic, Discovery, and other international platforms. His films have been supported by the MacArthur Foundation, National Geographic, Bertha Doc Society, and the Doha Film Institute, and exhibited at institutions including MoMA, the British Film Institute, and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

Currently an Associate Professor of Practice in Film and Television at Boston University, Aaron is passionate about championing diverse voices and collaborating with underrepresented communities to create nuanced, artful stories.
